Observers of the vehicle lift marketplace rely on a variety of data sources to measure market activity. One potential indicator is Penton’s EquipmentWatch INDEX. It focuses on trends in the heavy construction equipment marketplace, and it can be a useful gauge for related product categories.
The latest INDEX includes a quick snapshot of price, volume and age trends observed during December 2013.
The most recent INDEX shows the following highlights that EquipmentWatch researchers observed over the past month:
- Nationwide prices and volume dropped 0.5 and 3.8 percent, respectively.
- All regions, aside from the Northeast, saw an increase in volume of activity.
- The age gap between resale and auction markets dropped 4 months in December.
- Marketplace activity for the past 30 days included 5,947 equipment units sold at public auction and 207,901 equipment units sold in private resale.
Here are a few other trends that Patrick Dogan, who is Manager, Analytics at EquipmentWatch, spotted in the latest INDEX report:
- Prices dropped 2.5 percent in the Northeast possibly in reaction to November’s 5.5 percent average price increase
- The average age of earthmoving equipment dropped by 3 and 6 months in the resale and auction markets, respectively.
- Skyjack & Genie have the largest gap between the average age of equipment in the resale and auction markets of at 35 and 31 months respectively.
